CryoLife Inc. followed a first quarter of bottom-line growth with a 200 percent jump in profit in the second
quarter of 2008.

The Kennesaw, Ga.-based biomaterials, medical device and tissue processing company (NYSE: CRY) had net income of $3.9 million and earnings of 14 cents a share, compared with net income of $1.3 million and earnings of 5 cents a share in the second quarter of 2007. Net income in the second quarter of 2008 included a gain of $610,000 for the adjustment of reserves for product liability losses, while the second quarter of 2007 had a similar $490,000 gain.

Second-quarter revenue rose 18.3 percent to $27.2 million. Tissue processing revenue climbed 17 percent to $13.7 million, combined cardiac and vascular tissue processing revenue jumped 28 percent to $13.4 million and BioGlue Surgical Adhesive revenue rose 19 percent to $13 million. Orthopaedic tissue processing revenue fell 76 percent to $297,000.

Research and development costs were $1.3 million and $1 million in the second quarters of 2008 and 2007, respectively.
